las animas dec. 19

journal entry for dec. 19
up at 6am after not much sleep from all the banging as we rolled a lot in the surf.  i wanted to capture first light, that elusive time before sunrise, the moment hard to pin down as first light.  off in the distance was mismaloya looking like a bowl of fog.  it was quite cold and the wind whipped my hair and stiffened my fingers.  as the stars drew back i could see greater contrast in the landscape.  by 7am the first panga came by and then a long line of pelicans drifted off the land low across the water, their wings barely touching.  roosters have been crowing since i first got up and an occasional dog barks.  the clouds lift and then it happened - another sunrise turns the sky soft pink to orange, a color i want to fall into.  the day has begun.  more pelicans fly by now, in pairs.  lights are turned off inside the houses dotting the hillside and it's not yet 8am.  a panga motor hums in the background.
we decided to motor over to yelapa for breakfast which means we made it by noon.  a small bay with mooring balls only and expensive - 200 pesos for all day so we only stayed a couple hours.
reanchoring we decided on a nice spot just south of las animas.  we have a sea breeze during the day and land breeze at night.  little rolling so we slept better.  just as i was prepping my kayak we saw a whale fairly close by and i tried to kayak over but i was way too slow.  it felt good being back in the kayak.  i tried to clean the boat bottom after i kayaked over to quimixto but there's too much surge.
